On the 15th August 1945 (VJ Day), the merciless war that had raged for six years, claiming millions of lives, was finally over. Imperial Japan was forced to surrender following the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the world could finally begin to heal.
75 years on from the end of the Second World War, an official UK £5 coin has been issued to commemorate the immense struggle and sacrifices made to achieve lasting peace.
The most significant UK coin of the year
This year marks the last significant anniversary of the Second World War shared with the generation who lived through it, making this new coin release all the more poignant.
Produced in collaboration with Imperial War Museums, the design is reminiscent of the inscriptions commonly found on war memorials, capturing the magnitude of events.
Reverse designers Matt Dent and Christian Davies have noted the importance of the word peace visually dominating the word war to convey a sense that the horror of war had passed.
